All Of Us Have A Role

On Monday, October 5, people around the world will recognize World Habitat Day—a day set aside to reflect on something that feels both incredibly basic and increasingly out of reach: everyone deserves a decent place to live.

This year’s theme is “Adequate Housing for All.” I want to emphasize that last word: all.

At Habitat for Humanity-MidOhio, we see every day what the housing crisis looks like here at home. Central Ohio continues to grow, bringing new jobs, investment and neighbors to our region. But our housing supply simply isn’t keeping pace. We need thousands more homes each year to meet the demand created by that growth.

Of course, this challenge extends far beyond Central Ohio. Around the world, an estimated 2.8 billion people live with some form of inadequate housing. Conflict, political instability, climate change and economic hardship cause people to leave the places they know in search of safety, stability and opportunity.

For some, that journey brings them to Central Ohio.

Our region is becoming more global, and many of the families we serve at Habitat-MidOhio are New Americans. They are our neighbors and coworkers. They are raising families and building futures here. They work in transportation, manufacturing, healthcare, education, and many other industries that help our region thrive.

They are part of the all in “Adequate Housing for All.”

There is something especially meaningful about reflecting on that idea this year. Habitat for Humanity recently marked 50 years of bringing people together around the belief that everyone deserves a decent place to live. And next year, Habitat-MidOhio will celebrate our own milestone—40 years of serving families and communities across Central Ohio. You’ll hear much more about that as we enter the new year.

Those milestones are worth celebrating, but they also remind us of something fundamental about Habitat: this work has always been about people coming together.

That spirit of partnership is just as important today. We often say that no one organization can solve the affordable housing crisis alone. It will take nonprofits, businesses, government, and philanthropy working together. It will take volunteers willing to roll up their sleeves. And it will take neighbors looking out for neighbors, including welcoming those who are new to our community.

That may be what I appreciate most about this year’s World Habitat Day theme. Housing for all is a big global ambition, but it is also incredibly personal.

It’s the family looking for their first stable home. The longtime homeowner who needs a critical repair to remain safely in the neighborhood they love. The family who came to Central Ohio seeking a new beginning. The volunteer working alongside a future homeowner. The donor or partner who decides this challenge is worth investing in.

All of us have a role.

As Central Ohio continues to grow and change, we have an opportunity to make sure that growth creates opportunity for everyone. That means building more affordable homes, helping people maintain the homes they already have, welcoming our new neighbors and continuing to look out for one another.

Because when we come together to make sure everyone has a decent place to call home, we don’t just build houses. We build a stronger community for all of us.

Brandi Braun AL-Issa

Resource Development

Building Hope, Opportunity, & Home

This summer, we partnered with 3 churches to build the walls for 4 houses. First, in late August, Stonybrook Church in Gahanna built the walls for the Brailer family home, which will be built in Newark. In speaking with the family after the event, they were overwhelmed by the number of people that came out to build the walls for their home. They cannot wait to see each wall put into place on their lot as their house takes shape.

In mid-September, Second Presbyterian Church hosted our first ever wall build in the city of Newark for the Kiger family. Volunteers from the church and broader community persevered through heavy rain to build all the walls for a two-story house in just three hours, despite having to take a break while a thunderstorm passed through the area. We are extremely grateful for this new partnership hope to host many more wall builds with Second Presbyterian in the future, hopefully with less rainy weather.

In late September, Worthington Christian Church built two sets of walls for the Habib and Gure families. Following the Sunday services volunteers rolled up their sleeves to build the walls for two two-story houses that will be built in the Linden neighborhood of Columbus. It was a great day, filled with opportunities for community building once the walls were completed.

Thank you to all of our wall build hosts this summer! We’ll close out our Wall Build Season next month at Church of the Resurrection where we will build the walls for the Warsame Ali family home in Linden.

Construction

Welcome Jeremy and Skyler to the Habitat Construction Team

We want to give a warm welcome to two new team members who have joined the construction department in the past month or so. With plans for serving many more families this year, these new team members will have important roles to help us achieve our goals.

Jeremy Harrigan joined us last month as a new Construction Project Lead where he will be working alongside families and volunteers leading projects. He comes to us with some previous experience volunteering with Habitat on disaster relief post-Katrina. He brings an excellent mix of experience in social work and construction skills. In addition to his career in case management and business, he has also been a self-employed contractor. He has extensive experience in residential remodeling, project coordination, and volunteer training.

Jeremy shares, “I really appreciate everyone welcoming me and showing me the ropes.  I have truly enjoyed working with great mission minded people”.

Skyler Goodnite joined the team just a couple of weeks ago as Construction Administrative Assistant where he will be supporting the program management team and the department as a whole. He is a graduate of Ohio University and has most recently been working with Lowes home improvement centers in West Virginia for the past several years. The knowledge of building materials, administrative talents, and strengths that he brings will help us to continually improve efficiency in all of our construction programs. He has jumped right in and is eager to learn about Habitat and his new role.

Skyler said, “Working with HFHMO thus far has been fulfilling. Seeing the groundbreakings and meeting with a few families makes me eager everyday to come into work and make an impact in people’s lives in this community I now call home”. When you see Jeremy and Skyler in the field or in the offices please stop and say hello and welcome them to the Habitat team!

Lead the Way. Build the Future.

Every home we build starts with a strong foundation — and that includes the people who help make it happen.

At Habitat for Humanity–MidOhio, we’ve always believed that when volunteers have the tools, training, and leadership they need, the entire community benefits. As we prepare for a new season of growth — including the addition of multi-family housing units — we’re launching a new initiative to strengthen our volunteer leadership: the Cornerstone Construction Leaders program.

Why This Matters

The demand for affordable housing in Central Ohio continues to rise. Meeting that demand means we must expand how we build — not only in the number of homes, but in how efficiently and safely we manage our construction sites.

For years, Habitat-MidOhio has relied on a dedicated group of Adopt-A-House leaders, longtime volunteers, and staff project leads to guide teams through every phase of construction. But as the number of volunteers grows, so does the need for more leaders ready to share their skills and ensure every volunteer has a meaningful experience.

That’s where Cornerstone Construction Leaders come in.

What Is a Cornerstone Construction Leader?

Cornerstone Construction Leaders are experienced volunteers who step up to guide others, ensure safety and quality, and keep projects on track. Working alongside our Habitat-MidOhio construction staff, they play a vital role in helping us expand our impact and continue building strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.

Each Cornerstone Leader will receive hands-on training from our experienced team in specific phases of construction — gaining new skills they can pass along to others.

Cornerstone Leaders:

  • Support and lead specific construction phases
  • Mentor volunteers of all skill levels
  • Promote safety and craftsmanship on-site
  • Keep projects moving smoothly and efficiently
  • Help build stronger neighborhoods, one home at a time

What’s in It for You

Becoming a Cornerstone Construction Leader is more than a volunteer role — it’s an opportunity to lead with purpose and leave a lasting mark on your community.

Participants will enjoy:

  • Custom Habitat-MidOhio hard hats and shirts
  • Ongoing skill-building and leadership training
  • Invitations to exclusive appreciation events and luncheons
  • The satisfaction of knowing you’re helping families achieve their dream of homeownership

Join Us

We’re looking for people with a passion for service and a willingness to lead. If you can commit to just one day a month, you can help us build the future of affordable housing in Central Ohio.
