CEO Corner

It’s been an incredibly exciting few weeks at Habitat rooted in hope and opportunity. We broke ground on an exciting partnership project with the City of Columbus and Columbus City Schools that provides students with workforce development opportunities while building hope through affordable housing.

Partnerships are key to our future and vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.  The Columbus City Schools published a great piece outlining the partnership, which you can read here.

You can see some of our media coverage here:

We also had a ribbon cutting for a new ReStore location on Roberts Road.  The ReStores provide home maintenance and upkeep items at all price points.  We sell used and gently used goods – keeping many items out of the landfill.  The money generated from the ReStores support our work in affordable housing.  Please consider donating or shopping at a ReStore near you!

Construction

Getting Things Done For America!

We would like to take this opportunity to give a big thank you to Ken Quaye, who completed his year of service as an AmeriCorps member this month. Ken spent the past eleven months serving as a construction crew lead, where he helped with the construction of many new homes and repair projects. He began his AmeriCorps service with little hands-on construction experience but with a great attitude and strong desire to learn.

Throughout the year, Ken shared how pleased he was with the knowledge and skills he gained from working alongside staff members and long-time volunteers. He also found it rewarding to use these new skills to teach and support less experienced volunteers. Just like Ken’s infectious smile, we hope his example of passing along what he learned will inspire others as our construction department prepares to launch an updated and robust crew lead training program in the coming months. Thank you, Ken, for modeling this for us!

In the photo, Ken is installing laminate flooring in a new home—just one of the many skills he mastered during his year of service. One of his future goals is to attend aviation school, and as he wrapped up his service, he actively researched programs that would accept the educational award he earned upon completion. The HFHMO construction team wishes him the very best in this next endeavor and offers many thanks for his hard work over the past year in helping us accomplish our mission!

Resource Development

Habitat Young Professionals (HYP) rolled up their sleeves for a Rock the Block event on Old Leonard Avenue—the same street where Habitat MidOhio, in partnership with Fort Hayes Career Center, is building its first workforce development home.

October 6th is World Habitat Day

On October 6th, Habitat for Humanity MidOhio joins affiliates across the globe in marking World Habitat Day — a moment to highlight the urgent need for affordable housing. Since 1976, Habitat has helped more than 62 million people build or improve their homes, yet more than 21 million U.S. households still spend over half their income on housing. Together, we can change that.
