FAQs

What are the qualifications for a Habitat home?

See our qualifications here.

Where are you building homes?

We are currently building in Linden and the South Side in Columbus, and in Newark in Licking County.

What is “sweat equity”?

Each partner family must complete 200-250 hours of “sweat equity.” These are hours the family invests in their partnership with Habitat by completing construction and taking classes to prepare for homeownership. Examples of sweat equity include:

  • Construction on a family’s own home and other Habitat homes
  • Financial literacy and home maintenance classes
  • Working in our ReStore
  • Serving in your community

What is the process?

All applicants must attend an orientation, and we recommend everyone start there. See the upcoming orientation dates below. However, you may always call us at 614-484-1966 to receive an application in the mail. Once the completed application is returned with all required documents, it will be reviewed for income and credit. If income and credit are approved, the applicant will be eligible for a home visit by our Homeowner Selection Committee.

How long is the process?

Once accepted into the program, a partner family can expect it to be 12-18 months before they move into their home.

Do you look at credit score?

We DO NOT look at credit score, but we DO consider credit history. An applicant and co-applicant’s debt may not be more than 43% of their income, and they may not have more than $1000 in collections. If you’d like to look at your credit history before applying, you may get a free credit report once a year at www.annualcreditreport.com.

Is there a down payment required?

No, but each partner family must pay approximately $1200 towards closing costs and the first year of homeowners insurance which is due at closing.
